The Memorial Plaque to remember the 12 people that lost their lives in the 1974 M62 Coach Bombing

Just after midnight on 4th February 1974, due to strike action by the railways, a coach which had been commissioned to carry off duty British military personnel and their families on weekend leave to and from Catterick and Darlington. Was travelling eastbound along the M62 to the Catterick Garrison. When between junctions 26 and 27, a 25lb (11kg) bomb hidden in luggage or a parcel within the luggage compartment exploded. Killing 12 people including 2 children. It is thought that the bomb was planted by the Provisional IRA.

Their units were the 4th Light Regt Royal Artillery (Bdr Terence Griffin - Gnr Leonard Godden), 8th Signal Regt Royal Corps of Signals (Sgmn Michael Eugene Waugh - Sgmn Leslie David Walsh), 11th Signal Regt Royal Corps of Signals (Sgmn Paul Anthony Reid) and the 2nd Btn Royal Regiment of Fusiliers (Lcpl James John McShane - Fus Jack Thomas Hynes - Fus Stephen Whalley). One whole family of husband Corporal Clifford Houghton, his wife Linda and their children Lee aged five and Robert aged two died. 38 people (soldiers and civilians) were seriously injured.

This memorial was built at the entrance hall of the westbound area of the Hartshead Moor services because this was the site of the first aid station for the wounded.
