Caernarfon Beddgelert

Today, as has become the norm just of late, we arose a little worse for wear!

We decided to have a day of mooching about! 1st port of call was to Caernarfon and a big breakfast at The Pieces of Ate Cafe! We would recommend the breakfast here, good food, lots of it and very reasonable.

After breakfast we had a walk into Caernarfon centre, then to the Castle. Caernarfon Castle was built in the rein of King Edward I of England, work started in 1283 and stopped in 1330, although from the outside the castle looks complete, the interior buildings did not survive. It turns out that Andy's wife has traced her ancestors back to a previous owner of Caernarfon castle! We still had to pay to gain entry! There is a museum within the castle, which is very interesting; there is also a gift shop.

From Caernarfon we travelled to Beddgelert, this is a lovely village which straddles two rivers (Afon Glaslyn and Afon Colwyn). There are plenty of shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs for everyone. It is also a good starting point for some very nice walks. We had lunch at Lyns Cafe in Church Street (Stryd Yr Eglwys). We had a look round some of the shops; there is one called Crefft Coed Woodcraft. This has some amazing wood carvings and generally anything made from wood, well worth a visit.

We left Beddgelert via the A498, heading towards Capel Curig. We drove along this road going past Llyn Dinas on the right and then past Llyn Gwynant on the left, not far past Llyn Gwynant. There is a lay by on the left on a sharpish bend; we pulled in here to take in the views. We got a good look at Llyn Gwynant from here. We set off again until you eventually come to a lay by on the left. This is before you get to the Pen Y Gwryd Hotel. We pulled into the lay by as it offered a lovely view of Snowdon. (You need to ignore the pipe work coming down the side of the hills to your front). From here we set off back to the cottage.
