Red Wharf Bay & Porthmeirion

A panoramic photo of Portmeirion

Yet another great nights sleep for me, up at around 05:30, I did my normal ritual of making a coffee, and heading up the garden to see what the weather looked like, and to also get a signal on my mobile, to see what was happening in the world.

Andy got up around 08:00, and James an hour later. We had breakfast and discussed what to do today. The outcome, was to go to Red Wharf Bay, or as Andy likes to call it, Red Dwarf Bay, just up the East coast of Anglesey.

We left the cottage around 10:45. A couple of miles outside Llanfair PG, we noticed another Sopna Indian restaurant, which we had no idea was this close to the cottage (must remember for next time we visit). We arrived at Red Wharf Bay at around 11:00, we took a few photos, then decided to go and have a coffee, we went to The Old Boat House café & restaurant, I secured us a table in the sunshine, while Andy & James went to get the coffees, as it turns out, they had also ordered a slice of cake each. While we were sat having our cake and coffee, we had numerous visitors, a constant stream of wasps, and also a couple of friendly birds (this time not Robins).

One of our little visitors, while we had coffee & cake.

After our coffee and cake we went off to take some photos, there were quite a few small yachts/boats in the bay, which should give us some nice photos. I managed to get in the way of one of James's shots!

Andy had finished taking photos, so went and waited near his car while James & I went a bit further along the front taking more photos, Eventually we returned to the car, and at around 12:00 we left Red Wharf Bay.

We headed to Moelfire, arriving there around 12:30, we parked up and walked down to the sea front.

We decided it was time for some lunch, so we went into The Kinmel Arms for lunch. The food in here is very good, and the staff are very friendly. We left Molefire at around 14:00, and we decided to go to Portmeirion.

Although I know Portmeirion was used in the TV series The Prisoner staring Patrick McGoohan, that is about all I knew of the TV series, as I have only ever seen clips from the programme, so I do not know much about it. Where as Andy and James, were fans of this cult TV programme, so a lot of the comments they made through out the afternoon were lost on me!

The first shock I had when we got there was the entrance price, £10 per adult, but as we didn't get there until around 15:30, the admission price was reduced to £8 per adult. Like I have said I had not watched the TV series, so none of the buildings ment that much to me, they just looked like they had been plucked from the Italian coast, and dropped onto the coast of North Wales. The buildings are all brightly coloured, and the village is worth a look round. We had a coffee and yet more cake, then we went to explore this wonderful place. There are a lot of areas that are off limits to the public, unless you are staying there. There is also an abundance of gift shops, even one dedicated to The Prisoner TV series.

We would at times, split up as we walked round Portmeirion, taking photos of what we thought were photo worthy. We would meet up again at some point, then split up again. Then Andy & I met up and wandered off down the hill to near the shoreline, where there is a hotel. After taking more photos, we headed back up the hill, we spotted James, and Andy & I started to head towards James, when I said I would catch them up, as I wanted to go to the far end of the gardens, and take some photos from that view point.

The view from the far end of the gardens.

We met up again outside the cafe we had visited earlier. We then headed to the exit. It was worth the visit, but I think the time we spent there was plenty. It was now around 17:15, time to head back to the cottage.

Our route back took us back through Beddgelert and onto the Caernarfon road, we followed this until we arrived at the Tafarn Snowdonia Parc Brewpub in Waunfawr. We decided to stop there for our evening meal, it was around 18:20 when we arrived at the pub. Andy & I had been here before, for a meal, on one of our other Welsh adventures.

We had a lovely meal, and talked about our day out. We left the pub at around 19:00 (it had just started to rain) and headed back to the cottage. We arrived back at the cottage at around 19:30, at which point it had stopped raining.
