The Glyders
Everyone was up by 06:15, as we had planned to walk the Glyders via the Devils Kitchen.
We got to the car park at Llyn Ogwen (SH649604) for about 08:00, by the time we had got our boots on and our other kit sorted, it was about 08:20.
We walked from the car park following the well worn path up to Llyn Idwal, getting great views of the Devils Kitchen
The weather was great and we would stop just to take in some of the great views and looking back towards Llyn Idwal and the Ogwen valley.
After about an hour’s walk, I had to call a halt to the walk. The weather was very hot, I was sweating buckets and was starting to feel the effects of one too many beers from the night before. I informed Andy & Ray that I could not continue, and they should carry on without me, as I had done this walk before but Andy had not. Andy said if we all had a rest for 15 minutes or so, I might feel better. But I still felt the same and told them to carry on and I would just go round the base of the mountain and take some pictures, then meet them later. At this point I was on a real downer, as I felt I was letting the team down! So off they went, I just sat where I was for about another 15 minutes or so, I then got up and started to walk across and up the face of The Devils Kitchen, to see if I could get some better views. As I continued I started to feel better, so I thought I would carry on climbing. I seemed to get a second wind and continued up, eventually contacting Andy & Ray on the walkie-talkies, to let them know I was coming up!
I was glad I purchased some walking poles from the outdoors show earlier in the year, because the point where I met up with Andy & Ray was the start of the scree slope!
When we got to the top we had brilliant views of Snowdon and surrounding mountains. Andy has always wanted to see the Castle of the Winds (Castell y Gwynt), so when we got to them and saw what he had to climb through, he nearly changed his mind and was thinking of walking round it. But in the end he said he wanted to do it, which we all did.
There was some guy paragliding over near Snowdon, this looked very impressive. Some mist came in from the Ogwen valley, but it just couldn’t manage to get over the Glyders!
We had two routes to get off the Glyders; one was to go down to the Pen-y- Gwryd Hotel, then get a Sherpa bus back to the car. The other was to go over Bwelch Tryfan, then down to the car. But when it came to coming down we chose a different route, this one went down Cwm Tryfan parallel to Tryfan’s heather terrace route, and took us down to the A5 and then just the walk along the A5 back to the car. I treated us all to a can of drink each, and then Andy treated us to an ice pop each.
